A superb six-wicket haul from India spinner Harbhajan Singh polished off Hampshire for 146 to earn Surrey a commanding first innings lead of 215.
Harbhajan was first in action with the bat, adding 35 in six overs with Dominic Thornely, who reached 73 before he was Chris Tremlett's fourth victim.
Hants were in relative control at 63-2 before Harbhajan was introduced to find life in a previously docile surface.
The final nine fell for 83 as Hants failed to beat a 212 follow-on target.
Michael Brown hooked the second ball after tea to mid-on to as the collapse began, Chris Benham top-scoring for Hants with 41 on his Championship debut.
Jimmy Ormond was forced to replace his seamers for spin because of bad light, but it proved successful as he wrapped up the innings with two wickets.
Meanwhile, Hampshire skipper Shane Warne, who was bowled by fellow spinner Harbhajan for three, met umpire Alan
Whitehead in the pavilion to sort out their differences of
the previous day.
The pair were involved in a heated confrontation after an appeal for a catch was rejected, but shook hands and agreed to put the incident behind them.
