County Championship D1, Rose Bowl (day one, close): Surrey 326-8 v Hampshire
Scott Newman's fluent century was the foundation of Surrey's 326-8 against Hampshire at The Rose Bowl.
The left-hander struck 16 boundaries in his 111 and shared in an opening stand of exactly 100 with Richard Clinton (30), who was caught off Shane Warne.
Each top Surrey batsmen got into double figures but none could go on, with Chris Tremlett picking up 3-81.
But Australian Dominic Thornely boosted the total with seven fours and two sixes in his unbeaten 59 from 73 balls.
Warne was involved in a heated exchange with umpire Alan Whitehead after a strong appeal for a catch in the fourth over of the match was rejected.
Newman had made only 14 when Hampshire claimed an edge off Billy Taylor, and the home side were so incensed by the refusal that umpire Whitehead had to speak at length to Warne at the end of the over.
The two men talked again after play had finished and the Australian may face disciplinary action if the incident is mentioned in the match report.
