Northamptonshire seemed booked for their first Championship victory this season as Jason Brown spun them into a position of dominance against Surrey.
Off-spinner Brown grabbed 4-51 - taking his match figures to 9-164 - as Surrey were skittled for 147 at Northampton, setting the hosts 218 for victory.
They closed day three on 137-2, with Tim Roberts making 64 and Rob White 52.
The openers, who put on 111 runs together, both fell late in the day but the ascendancy remains with Northants.
David Sales' team were earlier dismissed for 332 in their first innings from an overnight 304-9.
