A five-wicket haul from Kabir Ali helped put Worcestershire in control against Surrey in Division One.
The visitors were bowled out for 155 after being put into bat, with only Graham Thorpe (41) and Jon Batty (53) making significant contributions.
Ali finished with figures of 5-60, while fellow seamer Matt Mason also enjoyed a successful day, with 4-60.
Worcestershire ended the day 170-0, 23 runs adrift of Surrey with Stephen Peters on 92 and Stephen Moore on 73.
