Surrey spurn winning chance
County Championship D1, The Oval
Surrey 508 drew with Gloucestershire 368 & 255-9
Points: Surrey 12, Gloucestershire 11

Gloucestershire's lower order batsmen made a nuisance of themselves to deprive Surrey of a win at The Oval in Division One of the Championship.

The visitors ended on 255-9 in their second innings, ahead by 25 runs as last-wicket Jon Lewis and Shabbir Ahmed saw out the last half-hour.

Earlier, Phil Weston and Craig Spearman played long innings before wickets began falling after lunch.

But Ian Fisher batted out 111 minutes and Lewis survived almost as long.

James Ormond plugged away for 25 overs, taking 3-53 but the Surrey bowling lacked a cutting edge.

Surrey: S A Newman, J N Batty (Capt, Wkt), M R Ramprakash, R Clarke, A D Brown, A J Hollioake, M P Bicknell, I D K Salisbury, T J Murtagh, J Ormond, N D Doshi.

Gloucestershire: C M Spearman, W P C Weston, M G N Windows, C G Taylor (Capt), A P R Gidman, Shoaib Malik, S J Adshead (Wkt), I D Fisher, J Lewis, J M M Averis, Shabbir Ahmed.
