Phil Weston hit an ultra patient century for Gloucestershire as they grabbed a healthy lead over Surrey on day two of this Division One match.
Weston hit 135 off 313 balls, with Matt Windows (58) and Mark Alleyne (51) joining him in vital partnerships.
Martin Bicknell was best of the Surrey bowlers with 4-107 as Gloucestershire were finally dismissed for 406.
Beginning their second innings with a deficit of 108, Surrey lost a wicket before closing on 21-1.
