Gloucestershire coach Mark Alleyne put in a rare Championship appearance, and took 5-71 as Surrey were bowled out for 298 on day one in Bristol.
Rikki Clarke, Nadeem Shahid and Martin Bicknell all made scores but regular wickets allowed the hosts to bowl out their opposition in the 72nd over.
In reply, Gloucestershire recovered from the early loss of Craig Spearman to be 113-2 at stumps.
Tim Hancock and Phil Weston had put on 79 for the second wicket.
