County Championship D1, Edgbaston: Warwickshire 546 & 171-3 beat Surrey 302 & 414 by seven wickets
Nick Knight steered Warwickshire to their first Championship win under his captaincy as they overcame Surrey by seven wickets at Edgbaston.
Set 171 to win, they knocked off the runs in 33 overs with Knight finishing 62 not out and Jonathan Trott on 35.
It was a tremendous effort by the home side after Surrey had been 364-2 in their second innings at one stage.
Mark Butcher hit 184 and put on 178 with Graham Thorpe (89) but they lost their last eight wickets for 50.
The two England left-handers enjoyed an ideal warm-up for the first Test against New Zealand, but the way Surrey collapsed once Thorpe was caught behind off Dewald Pretorius was a big disappointment.
Paceman Pretorius also bowled Butcher and Surrey skipper Jon Batty for figures of 3-88, while Neil Carter cut through the lower order for 3-39.
Carter began Warwickshire's run chase with 24 off 26 balls before being run out and although spinner Saqlain Mushtaq picked up a couple of wickets, Knight's calming influence made certain of victory.
