County Championship D1, Edgbaston, day three (stumps): Warwickshire 546; Surrey 302 & 243-2
Mark Butcher hit his first century for Surrey this term at an opportune time both for himself and his team in the Championship match at Edgbaston.
Warwickshire were able to enforce the follow-on after bowling Surrey out for 302 in their first innings but the 2002 champions fared better the second time.
Butcher ended the day unbeaten on 114 having put on 124 with Scott Newman for the first wicket.
With a day to go, Surrey, at 243-2, are now just one run behind Warwickshire.
Butcher's runs, coming in the week before the first Test at Lord's against New Zealand, were a fillip for England fans and the team management.
And they would have been reasonably happy that Ashley Giles took three wickets in Surrey's first innings, plus the second innings dismissal of Mark Ramprakash for 35.
