Surrey's torrid start to the 2004 season in Championship Division One continued as they were reduced to 190-7 replying to Warwickshire's 546.
The home side spent the second morning building a huge total, with Brad Hogg (158) and Ashley Giles (70) conspicuous in a partnership worth 191.
Mark Butcher was then out for a duck, and only Graham Thorpe (42) and Jon Batty (37 not out) prevented disaster.
Mark Wagh and Neil Carter each had two wickets for Warwickshire.
