Lancs spinning towards drop
County Championship D1, Old Trafford, day three: Surrey 369 & 185 beat Lancashire 278 & 129 by 147 runs
Surrey 21 pts, Lancashire 5

Lancashire's fears of relegation intensified as they slid to a 147-run home defeat by Surrey.

Spin dominated proceedings with 20 wickets falling in the day, six of them taken by Surrey's Nayan Doshi, who had match figures of 11-182.

The visitors were dismissed for 185 as Gary Keedy (6-92) and Carl Hooper (4-56) exploited a turning pitch.

But a target of 277 was well beyond Lancashire thanks to Doshi, and they were all out for 129 in 40.5 overs.

Surrey began the day on 8-0 and looking to build on a lead of 99 but Keedy's dismissal of Mark Butcher for 33, which ended a stand of 57 with Richard Clinton (35), sent the innings into a rapid decline.

From 69-1, the visitors found themselves on 115-7 before all-rounder Azhar Mahmood celebrated his call-up into Pakistan's Champions Trophy squad with a crucial half century.

He struck two sixes and four fours in an unbeaten 58 before running out of partners.

Alive to the conditions, Surrey skipper Jon Batty handed Doshi the new ball after an opening over from Martin Bicknell and he was soon among the wickets.

Iain Sutcliffe was caught behind for 11 and Mal Loye bowled for one before Mark Chilton, who hung around for over an hour for 21, gave a catch to Tim Murtagh.

The top five all fell to Doshi and he also had Sajid Mahmood stumped to finish with 6-57 as paceman James Ormond hastened Lancashire's end with a spell of 4-22.
