Essex and Surrey captains Ronnie Irani and Jonathan Batty disagreed over the decision to abandon their match.

Essex had reached 135-5 from 25.1 overs before rain first forced the teams off and then prevented any more play.

Irani said: "There was a tremendous amount of surface water and it was not fit for us to resume."

But Batty, whose side are at the foot of the table, said: "I know the conditions weren't ideal but we could have got a game in."
