Scott Newman kept Surrey in charge on day two against Kent with his second Championship ton of the season in a low-scoring match at Canterbury.
The visitors reached 263-5 at stumps for a lead of 37 runs.
Newman made 111, hitting 18 boundaries and a six, putting on 170 for the first wicket with Richard Clinton, who fell for 58 to Matthew Dennington (3-74).
Kent earlier added 90 to an overnight 136-8, with Azhar Mahmood returning 5-54 and Ian Butler hitting a late 68.
