Surrey have applied to stage next year's Twenty20 Cup finals weekend at a revamped Oval.
When the £20m redevelopment is finished the capacity of the south London ground will rise to 23,000.
Surrey's chief executive Paul Sheldon told BBC London: "We think it's time to come here.
"London hasn't had it yet and we think it will be highly appropriate to be here with what will be England's most modern cricket stadium."
