Everything went right for Nottinghamshire at Grace Road on Sunday, raising the prospect of a victory for them some time on the final day.
Leicestershire were unable to convert their overnight 159-2 into a decent score, collapsing to 243 all out with Greg Smith taking 4-40.
Virender Sehwag, 121 overnight, was out for 137 and the next best scorer was David Masters, who made 25 not out.
In Nottinghamshire's second innings, Charlie Dagnall struck four times but could not stop Guy Welton hitting 86 and Kevin Pietersen cracking 95 off 89 balls.
Jason Gallian declared with just four overs left in the day, but it was enough time for Andrew Harris to remove Masters, promoted up the order to protect Sehwag.
