County Championship D1, Lord's (day two, close): Surrey 274-3; Middlesex 370
Surrey's top order made good use of another cracking wicket at HQ as the champions ended the day ominously close to the home team's score.
Jimmy Ormond took the last three Middlesex wickets in the morning with not too much fuss to leave Surrey batting well before lunch.
Mark Butcher and Ian Ward put on 89 for the first wicket and Ward went on to hit a century, 104 to be exact.
Mark Ramprakash scored slowly but was still there at the end of the day on 68 not out.
He will resume on Sunday batting with Saqlain Mushtaq, who came in as nightwatchman after Graham Thorpe (46) became Abdul Razzaq's second victim late in the day.
