Stewart leads Surrey recovery

County Championship D1, Trent Bridge, day one: Surrey 159-5 v Nottinghamshire 211

Alex Stewart was denied his first Championship century in two years but Surrey still had the best of an action-packed opening day against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

Home skipper Jason Gallian carried his bat an unbeaten 112 from 203 balls but he could do nothing to staunch the flow of wickets at the other end, where the last five wickets fell for 35 runs.

Jimmy Ormond ran through the lower order for a five-wicket haul as Nottinghamshire tumbled to 211 all out.

Azhar Mahmood took three wickets at the top of the order, including second-highest scorer Darren Bicknell for 29.

The wickets continued to fall as Surrey took the crease, Mark Butcher caught behind first ball of Steve Elworthy and Ian ward lasting just seven balls before being caught off Smith for three.

Stewart crafted 98 from just 70 deliveries, with 17 boundaries along the ground responding to the loss of two early wickets with a 143-run partnership with Mark Ramprakash.

But he was one of three wickets for Greg Smith as Surrey stumbled slightly late in the evening, going to stumps 159-5 in reply to their hosts' first innings 211.
