Warwickshire's Mark Wagh was unbeaten on 91 when bad light stopped play against Surrey at The Oval.
Earlier, openers Tony Frost and Nick Knight had put on 153 for the first wicket.
Frost lived dangerously for his 78 and was dropped by Mark Butcher in the slips on 26.
Knight, clearly struggling with his knee problem, battled to 58 before succumbing to Martin Bicknell.
Alex Tudor took 3-64 and there were two wickets apiece for Bicknell and Jimmy Ormond.
