Selwood stings for Scorpions
Dominic Cork celebrates dismissing Ian Ward
National League, D2, The Oval: Derbyshire 193 (38.5 overs) (4 pts) beat Surrey 190 all out (44.4 overs) (0 pts) by four wkts
Steve Selwood scored a fine half-century to guide Derbyshire Scorpions to a surprise four-wicket win against Surrey Lions at the Oval. The 22-year-old was out for 50 with only two runs needed while trying to finish the game off in style, after Surrey had thrown away a flying start to set a target of just 190 all out. Jason Kerr, who finished unbeaten on 34 to add to his three for 27 with the ball in hand, scored the winning boundary with more than five overs left to see Derbyshire to victory over third-placed Surrey. Earlier, Mark Ramprakash had taken over from team-mate Ali Brown as leading run scorer in all one-day cricket this season with a majestic 78 to pace the Surrey innings. The hosts had won the toss and elected to bat, and openers Ian Ward and Brown looked to get after the Derbyshire bowling right from the off. Ward hit five consecutive boundaries in the fourth over off Kevin Dean as the Derbyshire paceman started to suffer. However, Brown was trapped lbw by Dominic Cork for 19 and then Ward was out for 31, caught down the leg side by wicketkeeper Karl Krikken off Cork. Surrey then subsided to 107 for five when skipper Adam Hollioake came to the wicket to join Mark Ramprakash. The pair put on 41 for the sixth wicket, but just as they looked set to bat out the innings and post a respectable total, Matt Dowman struck a double blow. First the medium pacer bowled Hollioake for 21 in the 36th over before repeating the trick to dismiss Ian Salisbury for two in his next over. The tail faded away with Ramprakash caught on the boundary by Stephen Stubbings in the final over. Surrey got the early breakthroughs they needed with Aussie Michael di Venuto departing for five, and Chris Bassano for 19. Steve Stubbings rode his luck for 26 but still managed to add 41-runs for the third wicket with Cork. With less than four an over required Cork did not need to try anything spectacular, but still managed to throw away his wicket after scoring 32, chipping a half-volley from Murtagh straight to Brown at mid-wicket. Dowman then departed for two gifting Alec Stewart a simple stumping chance off Ian Salisbury but Selwood kept his nerve in his 60-ball innings and Kerr provided fine support to ensure victory.
