Goodwin's innings anchored the Sussex effort

Sussex opened up the County Championship once more with a four-wicket win over leaders Surrey at Hove.

Robin Martin-Jenkins kept his cool hitting an unbeaten 23 to take his team home after Murray Goodwin's century had set up the victory.

Resuming on 85 for two, Sussex lost only one wicket before lunch with Matt Prior falling for 20.

Goodwin was still there having past his half-century and following the resumption he and Chris Adams took their side to the brink of victory.

However, one last effort from Surrey saw Alex Tudor remove Adams for 62 and then youngster Tim Murtagh accounted for Goodwin for exactly 100.

Alex Tudor then picked up the wicket of Tim Ambrose as Sussex reached tea on 265 for six, still 22 runs short with the nerves starting to jangle.

Martin-Jenkins and Kevin Innes ensured there was no comeback however, with an unbeaten partnership of 23 for the seventh wicket, to take their side to a crucial win.

Victory leaves Sussex creeping up on Surrey with the title favourites taking only three points from this match.
