Surrey celebrate one of Giddins' five wickets
Norwich Union League D2, The Oval: Surrey 152-3 (38.5 overs) beat Sussex 150 all out (43.1 overs) by six wickets

Surrey had more than 11 overs to spare when hitting the winning runs against Sussex at the Oval.

The home team's victory owed much to a sterling performance from seamer Ed Giddins.

Giddins took five for 20 in nine overs - including all four top batsmen - as the visitors produced a dismal display on the same ground where a world record 868 runs were scored in a single day's play on Wednesday.

Richard Montgomerie and Ed Giddins provided early catches for Jonathan Batty behind the stumps as Sussex slumped to 12 for two early on.

Then Will House, Mike Yardy and Bas Zuiderent also fell to the former England seamer and it was soon 40 for five.

The slide continued. Matt Prior was out to Rikki Clarke and at 53 for six, total embarrasment was on the cards.

Robin Martin-Jenkins, however, stood firm to hit 50 as he put on 53 for the seventh wicket with Kevin Innes (22).

Both men fell to Adam Hollioake, however, and Sussex were all out on the first ball of the 44th over.

Surrey did not have everything their way when they batted.

Clarke, Ali Brown and Mark Ramprakash all got to double figures before immediately losing their wickets and Ian Ward was bowled by spinner Mark Davis for 23.

From 77 for four, however, Nadeem Shahid (50 not out) and Hollioake (42 not out off 41 balls) ensured there would be no further alarms with a fine match-winning partnership late in the afternoon.
