C&G Trophy preview
Nasser Hussain will open the innings for Essex
Essex v Lancashire
B&H Cup finalists Essex are strengthened by the return of England captain Nasser Hussain as they continue their bid to earn a second trip to Lord's. Hussain is added to the side on duty for the Norwich Union League game at Ilford against the same opponents, which Essex won by seven wickets. Seven-times Trophy winners Lancashire have Andrew Flintoff back in their squad as they seek revenge for last Sunday's defeat. Chris Schofield is the other addition, with Peter Martin and Gary Yates missing out. Gloucestershire v Durham Durham have injury problems with Paul Collingwood, Martin Love, Steve Harmison and Ian Hunter all absent as they try to repeat last season's fourth round win over Gloucestershire. Batsman Michael Gough has also been left behind, with medium pacer Marc Symington and spinner Nicky Phillips coming into the squad. Gloucestershire prefer Martin Ball to England one-day spinner Jeremy Snape on form. Alongside Australian star Ian Harvey and skipper Mark Alleyne, the pace attack is completed by Mark Hardinges, Mike Smith and Jon Lewis.
Kent must manage without captain Matthew Fleming, who suffered a thigh injury against Notts at the weekend, so regular Championship skipper David Fulton leads the team. Seamers Amjad Khan and Jamie Hewitt are added to the squad. Warwickshire await fitness reports on England spin bowler Ashley Giles and batsman Jim Troughton. Giles has a bad back, while Troughton missed last Sunday's game against Worcestershire with a groin strain. Leicestershire v Sussex Veteran fast bowler Devon Malcolm and batsman Rob Cunliffe have been drafted into the Leicestershire's squad following Sunday's defeat by Somerset. "We have had a good chat about where we have gone wrong in the last couple of games - and there have been a few home truths," coach Phil Whitticase told the club's website. Sussex take on last season's finalists with James Kirtley again leading the team in the absence of Chris Adams. They are likely to stick to the same XI which beat Buckinghamshire by 125 runs in the previous round. Northamptonshire v Yorkshire Both sides are in urgent need of a lift following a series of poor results in their respective divisions of the County Championship. Matthew Hoggard and Michael Vaughan return to the Yorkshire squad from England duty, and spin bowler Andy Gray also travels. Northants coach Bob Carter has named a squad of 12 with all-rounder Matthew Cassar the addition from the side that lost by three wickets to Derbyshire on Sunday. "We had a great opportunity to win that match but failed to do it," Carter said. "All we can do is create those opportunities and if we keep doing it we will win that way."
Notts are overdue a trip to Lord's, having last appeared in a major final 13 years ago. They add seamers Gareth Clough and Richard Logan to the team which played against Kent on Sunday. Worcestershire stalwart Stuart Lampitt returns to their side, probably at the expense of Matthew Rawnsley. Paceman Alamgir Sheriyar has been relegated to the second XI following a loss of form, giving an opportunity to Matt Mason, and Australian seam bowler with a Irish passport. Somerset v Hampshire Trophy holders Somerset must manage without fast bowler Andy Caddick, who suffered a side strain during the third Test against Sri Lanka. But they are not short of fast bowling options with Richard Johnson and Steffan Jones now back to full fitness following injury problems and Matt Bulbeck also in the squad. Jamie Cox returns despite his bruised hand but Marcus Trescothick will captain the Cidermen. Hampshire captain Robin Smith faces a late check on a back injury, with Lawrence Prittipaul or Jason Laney set to deputise if he is ruled out. Surrey v Glamorgan Alex Tudor may be the the only man available of Surrey's England contingent with Mark Butcher (knee) and Graham Thorpe (ankle) ruled out and Alec Stewart (bruised hand) rated as doubtful. Pakistan off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq will have a late fitness test on his elbow. Glamorgan will be without skipper Steve James after he withdrew from the side. His daughter was rushed to hospital last weekend and is now awaiting surgery. Batsman Ian Thomas has been added to the squad as cover. Matthew Maynard is expected to figure after recovering from a broken finger, while Alex Wharf is back from an ankle injury. |
