County Championship D1, Leicester, day one: Yorkshire 1st innings 296-8 (at close) v Leicestershire

Former England paceman Devon Malcolm joined the illustrious list of players with 1,000 first-class wickets by dismissing three Yorkshire batsmen at Grace Road.

The 39-year-old, who began his career with Derbyshire in 1984, reached the landmark when he bowled youngster Vic Craven for 13, having earlier dismissed Craig White and Michael Lumb.

Team-mate Phil DeFreitas is one of only four other current players who have 1,000 wickets to their name, the others being Allan Donald, Phil Tufnell and Wasim Akram.

And Malcolm was still not finished, removing Richard Dawson before the close to finish with figures of four for 71.

"I bowl pace with swing, and I think that has helped me keep taking wickets," he said.

Yorkshire opted to bat first after winning the toss and made a good start with Matthew Wood and White putting on 62 for the first wicket before Wood was caught behind off Darren Maddy for 23.

White hit nine boundaries in his 62 before Malcolm had him caught by Vince Wells and followed that by finding the edge of Lumb's bat after he had made 21.

He was forced to wait for his 1,000th victim, however, as Darren Lehmann (51) and Anthony McGrath (25) added 71.

Wells eventually removed both and Malcolm returned to end Craven's 45-ball innings when the youngster obligingly edged a ball onto his stumps.

Leicestershire's progress was interrupted in the final session as Richard Blakey and Chris Silverwood added 51 for the eight wicket.

But Silverwood fell to Maddy for 33 before the close, leaving the in-form Blakey unbeaten on 34.
