Lightning struck down
Martin Bicknell appeals against David Byas
Bicknell finished with figures of five for 26
Norwich Union League D2, AMP Oval: Surrey 69-4 (11.5 overs) (4 pts) beat Lancashire 68 all out (20.4 overs) (0 pts) by six wickets

Martin Bicknell starred with five wickets as to lead Surrey to a comprehensive six-wicket win over Lancashire at The Oval.

The Lightning were bowled out for 68, tying their record lowest ever total in the National League.

Although they lost four wickets in the process, It took Surrey just over half that to reach their target, courtesy of a Michael Carberry cover-driven four in the 12th over.

Bicknell was the only Surrey bowler to get through his ni ne-over quota, conceding 26 runs, as just three Lightning batsmen reached double figures.

Surrey's 13 Extras chased Warren Hegg hard for top score, but the Lancs captain managed 17 before handing a return chance to Philip Sampson.

The miserable total was the same as that made against Yorkshire at Headingley two years ago, but nine higher than their lowest one-day score, set against Worcestershire in the B&H Cup in 1963.

Second wicket stand

Bicknell struck early, having Glenn Chapple lbw with just four runs on the board.

A 27-run stand for the second wicket was broken when Ed Giddins had Mark Chilton caught behind for 10, one of five pouches for wicketkeeper Alec Stewart.

Stewart took five catches but was run out for 11
And six further wickets fell for the addition of 18 runs as Giddins conceded eight runs from his six overs, David Byas his other victim for 13.

Hegg's 16-run partnership with Kyle Hogg seemed like a reprieve before he became Sampson's second scalp.

Pakistani all-rounder Azhar Mahmood was brought into the attack for just 10 deliveries in his final match for Surrey this season.

But it was enough to account for last man Peter Martin, taken by Stewart, and wrap the innings up.
