Alex Tudor sent a timely reminder to the England selectors as Surrey established a formidable lead over promoted Sussex.

Tudor took four for 84, leaving Sussex on 308 for nine at the close of play and in real danger of falling short of the follow-on mark.

The early damage was done by Tudor, whose good return was tainted somewhat by conceding runs at more than five an over.

Richard Montgomerie rattled up 27 off 13 balls before he was caught by Pakistani Azhar Mahmood, an innings in marked contrast to that of opening partner Murray Goodwin, who hung around for two hours to make 36.

Michael Yardy top scored for the visitors, but he was denied a century when he fell to Mahmood for 93, after hitting 14 fours in his 169-ball innings.

Mahmood, deputising for compatriot Saqlain Mushtaq for a month, also removed Mark Davis and Jason Lewry for figures of three for 59. And there were two wickets for fellow debutant James Ormond.

Ormond was pleased with his return, but admitted he could have done better.

"I didn't think I bowled quite as well as Alex Tudor - it wouldn't just be nine down if I had," he said.

"I wouldn't say it was one of my best days, but it's a start."

Surrey had earlier added 114 runs to their overnight total before captain Mark Butcher declared the innings on 575-8.

Ali Brown continued in aggressive fashion, reaching 177 after sharing in a 262-run stand for the fifth wicket with Nadeem Shahid (150).
