Martin Bicknell top-scored for Surrey as they were bowled out for 258 by Kent at Canterbury.

Bicknell made 78 before being trapped lbw.

England discard Ian Ward also got back in the runs, weighing in with 47.

In reply, Kent were 43 without loss at the close, Dave Fulton and Robert Key both unbeaten on 18.

Surrey had made a woeful start with Martin Saggers taking two quick wickets to leave the visitors reeling.

Saggers struck to remove Michael Carberry for just six and Nadeem Shahid for a duck, leaving Surrey on 31 for two.

Adam Hollioake soon followed, registering three runs, while Alistair Brown was out for a duck.

A gritty 40 by Jonathan Batty and Bicknell's score made sure Surrey reached a respectable total.
