Luke Sutton kept Derbyshire in the match against Sussex with a century at Derby.

He held up the CricInfo Championship Division Two leaders with only the second ton of his career.

Jason Lewry and James Kirtley both passed 50 championship wickets for the season but Sussex paid for dropping Sutton when the opener had made only three.

Murray Goodwin was the culprit at gully and Kirtley the unlucky bowler in the penultimate over before lunch.

Sutton took full advantage of that escape by batting through the rest of the day to take Derbyshire to 198 for six.

Sussex were bowled out for 280 after rain delayed the start until midday.

Sutton reached his half-century, only the second time he has passed 50 his season, from 99 balls.

Graeme Welch gave Prior his third catch when he slashed at Robinson but Sutton was still there at the close with Derbyshire 82 runs behind on first innings.
