Hampshire efficently dispatched Derbyshire to complete a 10-wicket victory that takes them to the top of the Second Division.

Having been dismissed for 140 and made to follow-on 242 runs behind, Derbyshire made a better fist of it second time around but Hampshire still completed victory inside three days.

Former England batsman Rob Bailey hit a defiant 98 before he was last out giving pace bowler Demitri Mascarenhas a low return catch and leaving Hampshire two runs for the formality of victory.

Hampshire opener Derek Kenway duly lifted Bailey's first ball for six to wrap-up the victory which keeps Derbyshire anchored to the foot of the Championship.

Bailey's diligence

Derbyshire began the third day at 10 without loss in their second innings, still needing another 233 to make Hampshire bat again, a modest achievement which they only just managed thanks to Bailey's diligence.

At 80-2, there were at least signs of resistance but that evaporated in the two overs after lunch when they lost three wickets in 11 balls without adding a run.

Mascarenhas was responsible for two of them and went on to finish with figures of 6-60, the best of his career.

At 128-7 in mid-afternoon it looked as if Derbyshire would be unable to get through to the tea-break.

But then Bailey found in newcomer Alex Edwards a partner on whom he could rely and together they frustrated Hampshire in a stand of 81 in 27 overs for the eighth wicket.

Edwards was leg before to Mascarenhas for a doughty 23 while Tim Munton struck some belligerent blows including five fours in also scoring 23.

Bailey was in sight of a deserved first century of the season after batting for three and a quarter hours but then made his only mistake in giving Mascarenhas his return catch.

Hampshire: G W White, D A Kenway, W S Kendall, R A Smith (Capt), N C Johnson, L R Prittipaul, A N Aymes (Wkt), A D Mascarenhas, S D Udal, A C Morris, A D Mullally.

Derbyshire: S D Stubbings, L D Sutton (Wkt), M J Di Venuto, C W G Bassano, M P Dowman, R J Bailey, G Welch, P Aldred, A D Edwards, T A Munton (Capt), L J Wharton.
