South African-born left-hander Michael Lumb hit a maiden century to put Yorkshire in command against Leicestershire at Headingley.

Lumb, the son of former Yorkshire opener Richard, shared a stand of 227 for the second wicket with Matthew Wood, who also hit a century as the home side put Leicestershire's attack to the sword.

A near-perfect batting pitch handed the initiative to Yorkshire and they took their chance in great style after the early loss Scott Richardson.

Lumb was immediately into his attacking stride, speeding to a half-century from 67 balls with seven fours.

Lumb was first to three figures from 165 balls with 16 fours. The stroke which took the 21-year-old to the landmark, a back-foot four off Devon Malcolm, also brought up the 200 stand.

Consecutive centuries

Wood twice pounced on short deliveries from left-arm spinner Daniel Marsh to reach his second century in consecutive games from 193 balls, which included a six and 10 fours, but shortly afterwards he was bowled off a pad by the persevering Jon Dakin.

Lumb and Darren Lehmann took the score to 270 for two before Lumb's superb innings ended when he edged a hook at a short ball from Malcolm into Burns' gloves.

He had hit 20 fours from 210 balls in scoring a century in only his fifth championship innings.

Rain after tea took 20 overs out of the day's ration but Lehmann produced a couple of piercing cuts at the expense of Malcolm in the brief passage of play that was possible.

At the close Yorkshire were one run short of a third batting point at 299 for three.
