Warwickshire's bowlers back up a solid batting display to have Hampshire on the rack at Edgbaston.

After Dominic Ostler hit his 13th first-class century Neil Smith bludgeoned a rapid half century to take Warwickshire to a healthy first innings score.

They then had all-rounder Mohammed Sheikh to thank for ripping apart Hampshire by the close as the medium pacer took four wickets.

Nick Knight fell to the first ball he faced on the second day without adding to 140, but Ostler made ligth of the setback to stroke 119 before he fell to Dimitri Mascarenhas.

Smith took a heavy toll on the tiring Hampshire bowlers to smash a 72-ball fifty.

The support cast for Hampshire, Neil Johnson and James Hamblin, took a pasting after controlled spells from Alan Mullally and Alex Morris.

Hampshire made an encouraging reply initially with an opening stand of 62 before Sheikh got to work.

The all-rounder, preferred to former Durham bowler Melvyn Betts, claimed a career-best four for 36 Sheikh in only his sixth first-class game in five seasons on the staff.

Sheikh was ably assisted by Dougie Brown who picked up three for 42.

Hampshire belatedly raised some resistance in an eighth-wicket stand of 37 between Johnson, unbeaten with 26, and Morris (20).
