Herefordshire lose opening match to Cheshire

Herefordshire County Cricket Club
Cheshire beat Herefordshire in a match reduced to two days by rain

Herefordshire suffered a 95-run defeat by Cheshire in their rain-affected MCCA Championship Western Division opener.

With both sides agreeing to declare after 55 overs, the visitors made 300-6 in their first innings before the hosts reached 233-8 in reply at Brockhampton.

Herefordshire were left with a target of 345 after Cheshire made 277-7 in their second innings.

Despite wicketkeeper Steve Adshead's century, the hosts could only make 250 as they were bowled out in 42.5 overs.

Richard Wilkinson led the way for Cheshire in their first innings, ending with 98 not out, while Brad Wadlan was the most successful Herefordshire bowler as he claimed 3-41.

Former Gloucestershire wicketkeeper Steve Adshead hit 109 from only 114 balls to give Herefordshire a chance of victory, with Brad Wadlan making 51.

But the pair lacked any real support as the hosts ended up 95 runs short.

Herefordshire skipper Chris Boroughs told BBC Hereford & Worcester he had few complaints about the result.

"Fair play to Cheshire they have played really well over the two days and have scored runs in both innings," he said.

"We had a couple of batsmen play well but collectively their bowling unit has been superior to ours.

"I always felt that if we got in and didn't lose early wickets then we were going to be in with a chance," he said.

"It was a little bit difficult because the covers had been on all day Sunday and there had been rain around so perhaps it wasn't the usual Colwall wicket as there was more in it for the seamers.

"If we managed to get in and survive the first 25 overs with, say, only one wicket down then I felt we could run them close.

"Unfortunately that was not to be as we lost three early wickets and it was only Steve Adshead and Brad Wadlan that got us back on track."

Despite the defeat, Boroughs felt there were plenty of positives to take from his side's showing and he had been especially impressed by Steve Adshead's form with the bat.

"He's been superb so far all season and certainly contributed to our winning the group in the one-day format," he said.

"He has carried that on today and it certainly bodes well for next weekend [against Cumberland] and hopefully for further down the line in the Championship.

"We just need to make sure that he's not the only one that is contributing at the top of the order - we need runs from other people as well."

Herefordshire host Cumberland in their MCCA Trophy quarter-final tie at Brockhampton on Sunday, 19 June with play due to get underway at 1100 BST.
