Defending champions York open up 14-point lead

Defending Yorkshire Premier League champions York have opened up a 14-point lead after only eight games.

York are bidding for their fifth title in a row, having already set a record by winning it four consecutive times.

Secretary and all-rounder Nick Kay told BBC Radio York: "We don't feel that we've played our best cricket yet.

"In terms of results it's very pleasing indeed. We've already seen two or three match-winning performances from the new recruits, that's really pleasing."

York came close to losing their first league game for nearly two years when they tied with Driffield in their opening match of the season, but the club's new players have gradually found form.

"It's difficult for any younger lads coming to a new club to find their feet and for the first two or three weeks nerves probably got the better of one or two," Kay added.

"Oliver Hairs made his first Yorkshire League century (against Appleby-Frodingham) and Andrew Tute has made his first Yorkshire League 50 (at Sheffield United).

"Jake Murphy has consistently taken wickets with the new ball, so they've made an impact. That gives them a lot of confidence."
