Sri Lanka beat New Zealand by three wickets with nine overs to spare in the one-day tri-series in Dambulla.

The Black Caps thrashed India in the series opener, but BJ Watling was their only batsman to offer much resistance, scoring 55 in Friday's 192 all out.

Seamer Kyle Mills took 4-41 as New Zealand threatened a shock victory.

In reply, Upul Thuranga (70) and Kumar Sangakkara (48) added 85 together before Thilan Samaraweera saw Sri Lanka home with 36 not out from 38 balls.

Tharanga had been dropped on 44 by Scott Styris at first slip off the bowling of Nathan McCullum.

However, the home side just missed out on the bonus point offered to teams winning within 40 overs - despite sending in Nuwan Kulasekara and Rangana Herath ahead of recognised batsman Chamara Kapugedera in a bid to force the pace, as both fell cheaply.

Sri Lanka pace bowler Lasith Malinga (3-35) reached a personal milestone when he recorded his 100th one-day international wicket - from 68 ODIs - when he bowled Martin Guptill with the second ball of the Kiwi innings.

Medium-pacer Angelo Mathews removed three of the Black Caps' top four on his way to taking 3-36.

The third match is on Monday when Sri Lanka play India.
