York beat Harrogate in derby game to go top of the YPL

Champions York beat Harrogate by 66 runs at Clifton Park to go top of the Yorkshire Premier League.

York were 251 all out over 55 overs but Tom Pringle took five wickets as Harrogate made 185 all out.

York skipper Marcus Wood told BBC Radio York: "It was a hard-fought contest and we're very pleased to come out on top."

Harrogate skipper Ryan Bradshaw said: "I knew their plan was to get a big score and bring their two spinners on, so it was tough from the start."

Bradshaw was hoping to win the toss and bat first, but instead it went York's way and they started brightly thanks to Alex Collins hitting 60, and Nick Kay, Simon Mason and Dan Wilson all scoring over 40.

"Today the middle-order batted very well at a very critical time in the game when we had three or four wickets down," Wood added.

"Tom bowled very well again, he's spinning it and he's loving his cricket and it's coming out very well."

Chasing 252 to win, Bradshaw said: "We did start off going for it, until Nick Lindley got out for 54.

"We needed about 220 for two points, and when that faded away we began looking for one point. We got it and I said, right boys, let's shut up shop, but it's very difficult with their spinners bowling."

Bradshaw's side were dismissed with just eight balls to spare, which would have earned them a point and denied York two.

The result leaves Harrogate ninth place in the table. Scarborough are fifth thanks to their good start, but they lost at Barnsley, who beat them by nine wickets.
