Scarborough's new signing Andrew Simpson smashed 175 as the home side beat Rotherham by 122 runs to stay top of the Yorkshire Premier League.

Simpson helped Scarborough to 322-5 with Rotherham 200 all out in reply, as spinner James Finch took 6-67.

Finch told BBC Radio York: "Simpson's good, he doesn't hang around, for those here watching it was unbelievable.

"We see him as the type of signing that's taking us from second last year to really chasing York down."

Scarborough's total of 322 put them in charge, and Finch was able to bowl from a position of strength.

It's a really big aim for the club to chase down York at the top of the table

"It means our spinners can bowl and not really worry about conceding boundaries, and put pressure on the opposition," Finch added.

"The only chance Rotherham had, really, was holding out for a draw, and we bowled so well that was not going to happen either.

"We feel as an all-round side we won't be far off (being) one of the best in the country. It's a really big aim for the club to chase down York at the top of the table."

But York clearly have no intention of letting their own crown slip after they beat Doncaster by 27 runs at Clifton Park.

Opener Duncan Snell made 151 as they piled up 307-7, but Doncaster made a fight of it and held on to reach 280-7, denying York two points.

Harrogate lost to the Yorkshire Academy by nine wickets at Leeds University, having posted 108 all out, with Ryan Bradshaw making 44. The Academy replied with 109-1.
