Isle of Man win Spanish opener

Cricket

The Isle of Man got their ICC European Division Three Championship campaign off to a flyer in Spain on Monday with a 65-run victory over Portugal.

Batting first in temperatures touching 40 degrees, the Manx side made 187-8 from their 50 overs, Max Stokoe top-scoring with 42.

Portugal were dismissed for 122 in reply, mainly thanks to a great spell by Arne van der Berg who took 5-23.

The Manx side will now play Belgium, one of the top seeds in the tournament.

Belgium lost their opening game by just one wicket to the favourites Israel.

Meanwhile, Sunday's Standard Bank Blincoe Cup final was postponed because of bad weather.

The final between Valkyres and Peel will now be played at Mullen-e-Cloie on Sunday, 6 September with an 1100 BST start.
