Ashes: Divided Australia slump to defeat in 1978-9

England under Mike Brearley proved too strong for an Australia side missing a wealth of first-team players lured away by Kerry Packer's World Series initiative.

England won the First test at Brisbane by seven wickets, with Derek Randall (74 not out) and 21-year-old David Gower (48 not out) seeing England to their target of 170. Gower's century in the Second Test at Perth helped England to a 166-run victory and a 2-0 series lead.

Australia were given some hope following victory in the Third Test, thanks to Graeme Wood's century and ten wickets from Rodney Hogg. But comprehensive victories at Sydney (twice) and Adelaide saw England romp to a 5-1 series win.
