Steve Waugh steered his formidable side to another thumping win on home soil. England were faced with a 5-0 whitewash until winning the final Test at Sydney.
Michael Vaughan won the Man of the Series award for his three hundreds - but the most dramatic century came from Steve Waugh in the Fifth Test at the SCG, scored off the final ball of the day when under real pressure for his place.
If Waugh had been struggling for form up until then, few other Australians had. Matthew Hayden scored a century in both innings of the First Test at Brisbane, and his opening partner Justin Langer scored 250 in the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne.
Despite England's victory in the last Test, which meant the series ended 4-1, few could have predicted that the Ashes would return to England two years later.
