Penrith Gold take County honours

Cricket ball

Penrith Gold enjoyed a convincing 32-run win against Millom in the under-15s Cumberland County Cup final on Sunday.

Jack Dulson and Nicky Birtle hit 50 apiece as Penrith made 124-7 before restricting Millom to 92-8.

Carlisle (81-5) won the under-13s County Cup, following a five-wicket win against Barrow (80-9).

The platform for the win came from the efforts of Carlisle's Matthew Hawley, who took three wickets and hit 26 not out with the bat.

Carlisle added to their silverware by claiming the under-11s league title for the second year in succession as the club continues to build at junior level.

Four regional league winners - Appleby, Carlisle Green, Cockermouth and Workington - were to contest the play-off at a sunny Caldbeck.

But with Appleby unfortunately being unable to attend the finals then the event became a three way round-robin format.

In the first match, Harry Grant (20 not out) and Ashley Shields (14 not out) were the main contributors in the Carlisle total of 258.

Cockermouth made 233 in their innings with Ben Davidson claiming stunning figures of 3-4.

They then went on to play Workington with the bowlers on both sides restricting the scores.

Workington posted a total of 234, Matthew Fowler top scoring with six and Tom Norman taking 2-6 for Cockermouth.

An opening spell by Oliver Wilson of two wickets for one run from just three overs helped to pin Cockermouth back in the first part of their innings.

Despite some late runs from Oscar Drimmie, their reply was restricted to 206.

That set up a Carlisle and Workington decider - a repeat of last year's final, with Workington setting a useful 243.

Ben Davidson (1-1) and Yousef Sahid (1-4) were the only Carlisle bowlers to take a wicket, Sahid pulling off a superb one handed catch taken from his own delivery.

Lewis Hull took two wickets in one over to leave Carlisle on 215 at the mid point and set up the prospect of a close finish.

That proved the case as Carlisle edged past Workington's total with a couple of overs to spare.
