Jersey book a place in WCL final

Jersey booked their place in the ICC World Cricket League Division Five final with an 84-run win over the USA.

Having been put into bat, Peter Gough again top-scored with 65 as the islanders ran up 220-5.

But, in reply, the USA were bowled out for 136 in the 39th over, captain Matty Hague taking 5-38, backed by 3-32 from former Worcestershire man Ryan Driver.

Jersey, already guaranteed promotion, will face Afghanistan in Saturday's final at Grainville (1100 BST).

Jersey coach Peter Kirsten said he was "highly delighted" his team had not only made the final but won promotion into ICC Division Four. And he said it was the two sides that wanted it most who had got to the final.

"The two nations who have got to the final have shown the greatest hunger and of course application of the basics of cricket," he told BBC Radio Jersey. "It's going to be a great final.

"We have played great cricket this week and it was just good intense preparation for this game. Everything we spoke about and planned worked."

Again the island side got off to a good start, Gough and Steve Carlyon posting 122 before the fall of the first wicket.

"It was a brilliant opening partnership," said Kirsten. "They set it up for us on a difficult wicket."

Following Gough's stumping, 11 runs later Carlyon was run out for 45, leaving Jersey 133-2 in the 35th over. But the runs still flowed over the final 15 overs of the innings.

Captain Hague chalked up 25 before being caught, bolstered by an unbeaten 28 from Driver, while Jonny Gough hit 19 from 15 deliveries.

In reply, the USA struggled when their first three wickets fell inside the first 10 overs.

Having slumped to 32-3 in the ninth over, Marshall top-scored for the visitors with 39 before he was caught by Carlyon.

But, after still being just about in the hunt on 99-5 in the 27th over, the five remaining US wickets fell cheaply as the home side booked their place in the final.
