Top-of-the-table clash washed out

Cricket

The much-anticipated match between leaders St Just and second-placed Paul in the Cornwall Premier League was called off after rain on Monday.

All of the top flight's Bank Holiday programme was washed out.

St Just are 17 points clear at the top after they won on Saturday while Paul were surprisingly beaten.

St Just cruised to a 113-run win at St Austell to keep their unbeaten record while Paul crashed at home to Werrington by 57 runs.

The win was Werrington's first of the season and was down mainly to a great first-wicket stand of 156 runs between Mark Horwell and Sebastian Street.

Horwell top scored with 80 while Street got 72 as they built the foundations for their 232-7 first-innings score.

Matthew Robins then took three for 24 as Paul's batsmen failed to impose themselves. Ryan Edwards hit 44 while Tom Hyslop and Kelvin Snell both scored 40, but they were the only Paul batsmen to make double figures as they ended on 175-9.

Neil Curnow hit 68 for St Just as they eased past St Austell scoring a first-innings total of 264 for eight before limiting their hosts to 153 for nine in reply.

Elsewhere Falmouth are third after beating fourth-placed Truro by just one wicket in a nail-biter in the county's capital.

Truro were limited to 128 all out thanks in part to John Udy's four for 14. But Falmouth struggled to reach the total and only managed it with an over and a half to spare for the loss on nine wickets.

Adrian Noott hit 44 not out to guide his side to victory.

Grampound won the battle of the bottom two, beating Newquay by a wicket with just three balls to spare.

Newquay hit 194-7 but Grampound found just enough runs to win in reply. Opener Thomas Hughes scored 92 as Grampound edged home. Neil Ivamy, who took five for 28, could not restrict Grampound in the final over.
