Jersey start with double defeat

Jersey Cricket Coach Peter Kirsten
Ex South-African international Kirsten coaches Jersey

Jersey's opening weekend of cricket was spoiled by back-to-back defeats in two one-day games against Guernsey.

Guernsey won comfortably in the first game, but the second was a nail-biter, Jersey throwing away a great victory chance to lose by one run.

The two matches at Grainville gave new coach Peter Kirsten an opportunity to cast his eye over his Jersey squad.

The former South African Test batsman has arrived to guide Jersey for next month's ICC Division 5 tournament.

In Saturday's first match, Jersey were convincingly beaten by four wickets after scoring 210 for 7 from their 55 overs.

Guernsey reached their target in just 43.3 overs, G H Smit (78) top scoring in his side's 211 for six.

Captain Stuart Le Prevost made 59, sharing a match-winning partnership of 120 with Smit.

Sunday's match was a much closer affair.

Chasing Guernsey's 154, in which Smit (41) and Matt Oliver (27) were the leading contributors, Jersey got agonisingly close, only to be bowled out for 153 in the 54th over.

Jersey seemed to be coasting to victory at 139-5 with overs in hand after Bradley Vowden (33) and Ian Crocker (21) had put on 53 to add to Johnny Gough's earlier 27.

But the run-out of Vowden triggered a collapse to leave Guernsey victors by a single run.
