But then a horrible mix-up with Marlon Samuels leaves Lara stranded as Kevin Pietersen completes the run out

It's an ill-fitting conclusion to Lara's achievements with bat in hand but the whole ground salutes his record-breaking career

Ramanaresh Sarwan also departs cheaply after Lara's 18, but Samuels adds 51 and the tail take the total to 300 all out

Andrew Strauss falls with England on 11 but Michael Vaughan and Ravi Bopara keep the score moving

Vaughan reaches his 50 but Bopara is run out by a direct hit from Dwayne Bravo, leaving England at 101-2 in the 16th over

Lara battles to contain Vaughan and Pietersen as England reach halfway needing a run a ball for victory

But another direct hit from Bravo runs out Vaughan for 79 and leaves England at 154-3 with a lot of work still to do

England's strife worsens at 185-5 after Bravo removes Collingwood cheaply and Andrew Flintoff holes out for 15

Another direct hit - this time from Devon Smith - runs out Jamie Dalrymple as England once again turn to Pietersen

Pietersen and Paul Nixon take England within sight at 263-6, with 38 required off the last four overs

Pietersen reaches his century with an enormous six but is bowled next ball and Plunkett follows quickly after

Nixon takes England into the final over needing four runs but falls to Bravo for 38 - England 298-9, with four balls left

A leg-bye and a brave swing from Stuart Broad over the covers sees England past the post with a ball to spare

Lara takes his leave from the international stage as England celebrate a win at the end of the Super 8 stage
