Third Test, Kandy, day one (close): Sri Lanka v Bangladesh 72-4
Malinga dismissed Omar in the third over of the morning
Bangladesh were reduced to 72-4 on a rain-hit first day in the third and final Test against Sri Lanka in Kandy.
Only 29 overs were possible between the rain showers in Kandy and the tourists lost wickets at regular intervals.
Javed Omar was out in the third over of the day, before former captain Habibul Bashar (18) gloved the ball behind shortly after an extended lunch break.
Rajin Saleh was dismissed for a duck and Shariar Nafees for 29 in the final session, both by Muttiah Muralitharan.
"It was not the easiest day for batting," said Bangladesh captain Mohammed Ashraful, at the crease on four at the close of play, with Tushar Imran on six.
"We were going on and off and the conditions were also not very easy.
"The wicket appeared to freshen up whenever we came back and there was also some bounce.
"Hopefully we can come back tomorrow and get a good start.
"We badly need to put up a good total in the first innings."
Sri Lanka, who won the toss and elected to field, brought in all-rounder Farveez Maharoof, left-arm paceman Sujeeva de Silva and batsman Upul Tharanga to their side.
Bangladesh named batsman Tushar Imran in place of Mehrab Hossain and left-arm seamer Syed Rasel was named in place of Mohammad Sharif.
Omar was trapped lbw by seamer Lasith Malinga for eight in the third over.
Nafees and Bashar then compiled a partnership of 40 before Maharoof forced Bashar to glove a catch to wicket-keeper Prasanna Jayawardene.
The afternoon session was reduced to just 20 minutes and Sri Lanka struck a double blow when the teams returned to the field late in the day.
Saleh was deceived by Muralitharan's doosra and was caught at slip and Nafees spooned a drive to De Silva at extra cover.
The tourists are striving to avoid a 3-0 series whitewash after losing the first two Tests by an innings.
