New Zealand have lost patience with batsman Craig McMillan, dropping him for the third Test against Australia and bringing in James Marshall.
McMillan, who has only one fifty in his past 15 knocks, is the only casualty from the Kiwis' lucky second-Test draw.
"James is one of a few players adding depth to the pool of players we select from," coach John Bracewell said.
Marshall will open the innings, allowing out-of-form skipper Stephen Fleming to drop to number four.
New Zealand confirmed that Marshall's twin brother Hamish will remain at three in the batting order with Lou Vincent moving to five and Nathan Astle to six.
Marshall, 26, made his one-day debut against the Aussies in February and has a high-score of 14.
The Marshalls will be eighth set of brothers to represent New Zealand in Test cricket.
The third and final Test gets under way in Auckland on Saturday.
New Zealand third Test squad: Stephen Fleming (captain), Nathan Astle, Craig Cumming, James Franklin, Hamish Marshall, James Marshall, Chris Martin, Brendon McCullum, Iain O'Brien, Daniel Vettori, Lou Vincent, Paul Wiseman.
