Former British prime minister John Major has been made an honorary life member of the prestigious Cricket Club of India in Mumbai (Bombay).

Major, a life-long cricket fan, is president of county club Surrey.

He was presented with a silver plate brought out in 2000 to mark Sachin Tendulkar's 100th Test match, played at Surrey's home ground The Oval.

"I am honoured to be amidst so many greats of the game. I will cherish it forever," said Major.

Former India captains Sunil Gavaskar and Polly Umrigar were among the guests who attended the ceremony.

"I have seen the 100s and 200s scored by Umrigar and Gavaskar against England," added Major.

"English crowds love Indian cricketers as they are real entertainers.

"Your spinners add charm to the game."

Major, Britain's premier from 1990 to '97, is in India to raise funds for blind people in a programme called Seeing is Believing.
