Third Test: As it happened
South Africa beat England by 196 runs

Steve Harmison gave England something to smile about with his highest Test score as they slumped to a 196-run defeat by South Africa in Cape Town.

The Durham paceman made his highest score of 42 off 42 balls in a stand of 51 with Matthew Hoggard before England were finally all out for 304.

Makhaya Ntini finished things off when Harmison was caught at gully.

But the main damage was done by Shaun Pollock and spinner Nicky Boje, who each picked up four wickets.

1231: The game to an end as Harmison finally falls to Ntini, caught by Dippenaar, and the series is level at 1-1 with two to play.

1229: Harmison pulls away for two to become the highest scorer in the innings and bring up a half century partnership with Hoggard.

1228: Harmison collects another four as he dabs the ball away through the off-side.

1226: Hoggard paddles Boje down to long leg for two.

1221: Harmison equals his best score in Tests by running Ntini down to third man for four to reach 36.

1217: Boje resumes from round the wicket and finds plenty of spin in a maiden over which sees Hoggard groping uncertainly for the ball.

1213: Harmison offers up a return catch to Ntini, but he fails to hold the chance as he grabs for the ball.

1212: Ntini angles the ball into Hoggard's pads and he flicks the ball down to long leg for a single.

1207: Harmison swings Boje over mid-wicket for six to move into the 30s.

1206: It proves to be just a change of ends for Boje, who relieves Pollock, but concedes four as Harmison sweeps fine.

1201: South Africa turn to Ntini as Boje is withdrawn from the attack.

1159: The entertainment continues as Harmison lofts Pollock over long-on, the ball dropping just inches inside the rope as 18 runs come from the over.

1158: Harmison deflects a wide ball past second slip's right hand for his third four.

1156: Pollock drops short and Harmison pulls powerfully for four.

1154: Harmison is off the mark as he squeezes the ball through the slip cordon for two. Buoyed with confidence, he clips the next on the full to square leg for four.

1146: Hoggard offers no shot to Boje's arm ball but his judgment of the position of his off stump proves accurate.

1140: Pollock goes round the wicket to Jones and it pays off immediately as Kallis takes a sharp catch at slip
England 253-9 (Jones 19)

1137: England's total reaches 250 as Jones drives Boje pleasantly through extra cover for four. He slices the next delivery past point for three.

1134: Jones plays Pollock through the gap at cover for an easy single.

1132: Boje continues to give the ball plenty of air and although Jones fails to time another powerful blow, he adds a single to deep mid-wicket.

1130: Jones hoists Boje over mid-on for four and carves the next ball through the covers for another boundary.

1129: Hoggard turns Pollock away through square leg and adds two to the England total.

1123: Jones looks unconvincing as he tries to play some positive shots against Boje, before squirting the final ball away off the outside edge for two.

1116: Boje resumes with a testing maiden over to Jones, who does well to keep out the final delivery which keeps low.

1111: Four byes are added to the total as a Pollock bouncer down the leg-side eludes the grasp of keeper de Villiers. The next ball leaps alarmingly off a good length and Hoggard does well to survive.

1110: Pollock takes up the attack for South Africa, who are looking to make short work of England's tail.

1027: A stunning catch from Kallis at slip gives Boje his second wicket of the spell as Jones falls to an edged drive.
England 225-8 (Jones 38)

1026: Jones skips down the track to slam Boje for four straight down the ground.

1016: Boje dismisses Giles as the batsman edges a defensive shot to first slip.
England 220-7 (Giles 25)

1013: Giles fends off a short ball from Langeveldt which he glances fine on the leg-side for four.

1010: Jones hooks Langeveldt for three.

1004: Jones brings up the fifty partnership and 500 career runs in his short Test career by punching Langeveldt behind a deep-set point for four.

0959: Boje is into the attack, around the wicket to the right-handed Giles. In his first over, Giles sweeps for two.

0956: Jones leans back to play a delightful shot off the back foot, Langeveldt put away through the covers for four.

0953: A punchy drive from Giles gives the Warwickshire man his first boundary as he despatches an irritated Kallis through the covers.

0944: Jones edges Kallis to third slip for four, where Smith, ludicrously, has no fielder catching. The next ball is driven through the covers for four.

0938: Giles drives Pollock past mid-off for three.

0935: Jones pins his ears back to spank a cut shot off Kallis for four. The following ball is driven through the covers for a second boundary.

0926: England are still waiting for their first boundary of the morning as Giles clips Pollock wide of mid-on for two and bunts him through the off-side for two more.

0920: Giles drives Pollock through the off-side for three.

0913: Jones has to fend off a Ntini bouncer which gets up to throat height.

0903: Giles gets off the mark by tucking Pollock off his legs for a single.

0856: Amla, at short leg, spills a chance offered by Jones off Ntini.

0853: Pollock gets his third wicket of the innings as a ball slanting across the left-hander leaves him a fraction - the batsman edging to de Villiers.
England 158-6 (Thorpe 26)

0851: A Pollock leg-cutter narrowly evades an outside edge proffered by Jones.

0846: England safely negotiate the first over with the second new ball which now passes from Pollock to Ntini.

0840: Jones weathers some inconsistent bounce to pull Langeveldt for a single, and South Africa take the new ball immediately.

0835: Boje is bowling over the wicket into some rough patches outside Thorpe's off stump. The batsman sweeps safely for two to move to 24.

0833: Jones faces up to Langeveldt on a typically sunny fifth morning and a maiden over is completed.
