Venues Guide - Kimberley
De Beers Diamond Oval

27 January v South Africa A

As the home of the South African diamond industry, no trip to Kimberley would be complete without seeing the diamond mines.

It's possible to view both the defunct Kimberley Mine - aka "The Big Hole" - and the working mines at Bultfontein and Dutoitspan.

The Big Hole, dug entirely by pick and shovel, is a staggering 800m deep, although water fills three quarters of it, and is viewed from an excellent museum.

Visitors who like to take things easier should take a stroll around Belgravia, where those who made their fortunes in the town built their homes.

Then head off for a drink at the Kimberley Club, which once boasted to have more millionaires as patrons than anywhere in the world.

The area around Kimberley is also rich with sites connected to the Anglo-Boer War from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Nearby are the battle sites at Maggersfontein, Graspan and Paarderberg.

However, public transport outside of the city centre is poor so you'll need your own car.

For those who need refreshment after the cricket, Kimberley is just the place for a pub crawl with a proliferation of bars and pubs.

Go by foot and visit as many as possible or go from pub to pub in a taxi and you can sample The Kimberlite - a drive-in bar.
