Fletcher became England's first foreign coach when he replaced David Lloyd.
He has helped England become a force in Test cricket but progress in the one-day side has been somewhat slower.
His playing highlight was leading Zimbabwe to a 13-run win over Australia during the 1983 World Cup.
After a spell as Western Province director of cricket, he joined Glamorgan and guided them to the County Championship title in his first season.
A taciturn figure, Fletcher does not suffer fools glady and has made no secret of his disdain for players who do not have the right approach to their careers.
Fletcher is renowned for his one-to-one coaching, for instance teaching England's batsmen the forward press to help them deal with spinners.
He is keen to stay in the background, rather than hog the limelight, and he tries to delegate responsibility to the players whenever possible, even setting up a "senior management" of players to give them a strong voice in the set-up.
Did you know? Fletcher once worked Phil Tufnell so hard in fielding practice that the spinner was left curled up on the floor like a baby because he was so exhausted.
