Chris Taylor stroked a century to dig Gloucestershire out of a tight spot on day one against Surrey at The Oval.
The skipper's 177 guided the visitors to 368 after Jimmy Ormond (3-78) had helped reduce the visitors to 55-3.
Taylor clubbed 28 boundaries and put on 131 for the fourth wicket with Alex Gidman (62) before Tim Murtagh (5-74) finished off the tail.
In reply, Surrey slumped to 2-1 at stumps with the loss of Adam Hollioake to a run-out for nought.
